Ganciclovir

Description of the drug:

Antiviral in the form of an eye ointment.

Form:

Tube of ophthalmic ointment 5g.

Indications:

Ganciclovir is used in cats to treat eye infections caused by the herpes virus.

Contraindications :

This medication should not be used unless otherwise indicated by a veterinarian, in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to this medication or to any of its components. 

If the ointment is ingested, for example during grooming, then it can cause toxicity to the bone marrow and kidneys.

Side effects:

Side effects reported in humans and animals include a blurred vision, eye irritation, punctate superficial keratitis (microscopic erosions of the cornea) and redness of the conjunctiva. 

The side effects caused by ointment ingestion are those related to bone marrow suppression and kidney damage.

Recommended monitoring: 

Make sure that the animal's condition improves and that he does not suffer any side effects. 

In case of accidental ingestion, blood tests are recommended to check the condition of the kidneys and bone marrow. 

Interactions with other medications :        

Ganciclovir should not be mixed directly with any other medication.

It is important to notify the veterinarian if the animal is already receiving other medication at the time of starting ganciclovir. 

Storage:

Keep at room temperature, away from moisture and away from direct sunlight.

Warning:

The eye should be cleaned with a non-irritating solution indicated for this purpose before applying the medication.

Avoid touching the eye with the tip of the container.

After applying the medication, simply close the eyelids and massage gently for a few seconds to fully extend the product over the entire surface of the eye.

Prevent the animal from cleaning the area near the eyes after application. If necessary, an Elizabethan collar can be used.

Disinfect the container tip with rubbing alcohol after each application.

Any ophthalmic preparation should be discarded 1 month after opening the container.

When different textures of ophthalmic medications are used at the same time, it is important to apply solutions first and then ointments.

In addition, it takes 5 minutes between ocular products to allow everyone to be absorbed and act appropriately.
