Origin and History: This breed comes from a cross of dogs rescued from a shipwreck in 1807 on the Maryland coast in the Chesapeake Bay area. It contains, among other things, curly-haired and flat-haired retrievers, otter dogs, setters and Irish water dogs.

Personality: An affectionate and devoted dog towards their master. If this dog is well socialized, they can be kind to strangers but otherwise aggressive.

Known health problems: Elbow and hip dysplasia, cataract, osteochondritis dissecans, progressive atrophy of the retina

Note: Swimming is one of their favorite activities.
