This medicine is also not recommended for pregnant or nursing animals, nor for young animals who have not yet lost their baby teeth.
Please discuss with a veterinarian or consult the product monograph that accompanies the product for more information on contraindications.
The most common side effects are decreased appetite, vomiting and diarrhea.
This product can also cause proliferation (multiplication of cells) of the gums, excessive growth of hair and damage to the liver or kidneys. It predisposes pets to bacterial and fungal infections.
Please see the product monograph for additional side effects.
It is recommended that the animal be examined regularly by a veterinarian if Atopica® is to be used in the long run. The veterinarian will be able to verify that no bacterial or fungal infection (fungus) have developed.
He will also be able to make sure that the liver and the kidneys of the animal remain healthy by running blood tests.
Atopica® may interfere with the effectiveness of certain medications if used simultaneously. You can ask your veterinarian which ones.
Please also notify the veterinarian if your pet is already taking any drug(s) before starting treatment with Atopica®. This will allow him or her to make sure that they are compatible.
Store at room temperature.
Give the medication to the animal while its stomach is empty, so an hour before or two hours after a meal.
This product usually reaches its maximum effect 2 to 4 weeks after the start of treatment.
If side effects occur and are severe, worsening or continuing, please contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
Atopica® is available in capsules for dogs and in an oral solution for cats.
