FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)
- This virus infects cats, but is not contagious to humans.
- Transmission to the fetuses or the kittens happens when the virus passes through the placenta or gets in the milk. A cat can also get the virus through a bitewound or by coming in contact with the blood, the saliva or the cerebrospinal fluid of an infected cat.
- The virus can stay dormant up to seven years.
- The symptoms are due to the deficiency of the immune system, so they are variable.
- This disease can not be treated and is fatal.
- Risks of transmission can be reduced by keeping the cat indoors and by neutering cats.
- There are no vaccine available.
- The virus in the blood can be detected with a screening test done in the clinic.
