Zenrelia

Zenrelia is a prescription veterinary medication used in dogs to help control itching associated with skin allergies and atopic dermatitis. Its active ingredient, ilunocitinib, acts on certain inflammatory pathways to reduce pruritus and improve the animal’s comfort. Zenrelia is administered orally, once daily, according to the dose prescribed by the veterinarian. A veterinary examination is necessary to confirm that this treatment is appropriate for your dog.

Form

Chewable tablets: **4.8 mg, 6.4 mg, 8.5 mg, and 15 mg**.

Zenrelia is an oral tablet veterinary medication used in dogs to help control itching associated with skin allergies, such as allergic dermatitis and atopic dermatitis. Its active ingredient, ilunocitinib, works by modulating certain inflammatory pathways responsible for pruritus, which may help break the itch-scratch cycle. Zenrelia is indicated for dogs at least 12 months of age.

This treatment may be recommended by a veterinarian when a dog shows signs such as frequent itching, excessive licking, redness, recurrent ear infections, or chronic skin irritation. It may be used in the management of certain environmental, food-related, or flea-bite allergies, depending on the animal’s medical assessment.

Zenrelia is generally given once daily, according to the dog’s weight and the veterinary prescription. Because it acts on the immune response, it is not suitable for all patients. A veterinary examination is necessary before starting treatment, particularly to assess the dog’s overall health, any existing infections, vaccination status, and other medications being used. Reported adverse effects may include, among others, vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy.

If your dog scratches frequently or has recurring skin problems, a veterinary consultation can help identify the cause of the itching and determine whether Zenrelia is an appropriate option for their condition.

Recommended follow-up

Veterinary follow-up is recommended when using Zenrelia, especially if the treatment is given long term. Your veterinarian can assess the response to the medication, monitor for possible side effects, and ensure that no infection or underlying condition is complicating your dog’s itching.

Interaction with other drugs

Zenrelia may interact with or require precautions when used with certain medications, particularly corticosteroids, cyclosporine, and other immunosuppressive treatments. Before starting Zenrelia, it is important to inform your veterinarian of all medications, supplements, natural products, or antiparasitic treatments your dog is receiving.

Contraindications

Do not use in dogs under 12 months of age. Do not use in dogs with a serious or active infection. Zenrelia modulates the immune response and may increase susceptibility to infections. Use with caution in dogs with a history of recurrent serious infections, recurrent demodicosis, or neoplasia, as benign and malignant neoplastic conditions were observed in clinical studies. Use with caution in immunosuppressed dogs or dogs receiving other immunosuppressive medications. Use with glucocorticoids, cyclosporine, or other systemic immunosuppressants has not been well evaluated. Safety has not been evaluated in dogs weighing less than 3 kg. Use with caution in dogs with liver or kidney disease. Do not use in pregnant, breeding, or lactating females without veterinary evaluation.

Side effects

Like any medication, Zenrelia may cause side effects. If your dog experiences persistent vomiting, significant diarrhea, marked fatigue, loss of appetite, or any other unusual change, contact your veterinary team.

Warning

Zenrelia should always be prescribed after a veterinary examination, as some dogs are not good candidates, including young dogs, dogs with an active infection, or those requiring an upcoming vaccination.
