Dental care
Dental hygiene is as important for animals as it is for humans! Yet it is very often neglected in animals. Dental diseases such as periodontitis and gingivitis can cause irreparable damage to the kidneys, liver, heart and even the brain. Dental food, daily tooth brushing, annual dental checkups and regular scaling can help prevent these problems.
We recommend that pets’ teeth be brushed daily with a proven enzymatic toothpaste. If it is not possible to brush as frequently or to supplement brushing, there are foods that have been proven to combat plaque and tartar. Just look for the VOHC (Veterinary Oral Health Council) seal on the bag to be sure.
There are also enzyme gels and treats that can help clean teeth and freshen pet breath. Again, it is advisable to look for the VOHC seal to make the right choice. These methods should still be combined with other dental care to ensure good dental and oral hygiene for pets.
However, it must be remembered that despite the best dental care carried out at home, it cannot completely eliminate the need for scaling. At best, they only lengthen the intervals between descalings. It is therefore very important to consult a veterinarian regularly so that he can assess the health of the animals' teeth and gums. They will then be able to determine which care is best suited to their dental and oral condition.
Descaling
Our dentistry service is available at all times during our opening hours. A complete dental examination under general anesthesia is performed, followed by manual scaling, ultrasonic scaling (piezo) and polishing. Tooth extractions can be performed if necessary.
All these procedures eliminate bad breath and prevent premature tooth loss and the diseases mentioned above.
Dental X-rays
DR (Direct Digital Radiography) digital dental X-rays are available in our hospitals. These help us to better understand the condition of dental roots as well as to detect dental abscesses and other periodontal diseases that are often invisible to the naked eye.
Dental x-rays are also useful in determining whether teeth need to be extracted and whether or not it is possible to do so. In this case, it is often because the root of the tooth is fused to the bone. Without an x-ray, it is impossible to know whether the root is fused or not.
Good to know
Even in young dogs and cats, dental X-rays are indicated: they allow, for example, the detection of congenital malformations (present at birth) such as encysted teeth which, if not extracted, can lead to the loss of permanent teeth and thus harm the animal throughout its life.
Tooth extractions
In several situations, it may be necessary to extract teeth. For example, when they are trapped under the gum, when there are supernumerary teeth, when the poor positioning of the teeth causes occlusion problems, when there are caries or dental resection as well as in the case of severe periodontitis, dental fracture or dental abscess, etc.
Remember that animals always do better after unhealthy teeth causing them pain or other problems have been removed. They’re perfectly capable of eating anyway, despite their missing teeth!
