Enacard® for animal heart and kidney diseases
Merial

Enacard®

Enacard® (enalapril) is a vasodilator that enhances blood circulation, protects the kidneys, and treats heart and kidney diseases in animals.

Form

Tablet

Enacard®, made of enalapril maleate, is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. This vasodilator improves blood circulation and protects the kidneys by reducing protein loss in urine. It treats heart diseases such as mitral valve regurgitation and kidney disorders like idiopathic glomerulonephritis and chronic renal failure. In cats, it is also used to manage hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Veterinary supervision is essential, as this medication may have contraindications and side effects. Recommended follow-up

  • Renal monitoring: Regular assessment of kidney function to detect any dysfunction.
  • Blood pressure: Periodic checks to prevent hypotension.
  • Blood tests: Analysis of blood cell levels and potassium to prevent imbalances.
  • Side effects: Observation of symptoms such as weakness, vomiting, or any other adverse effects.

Interaction with other drugs

Hypotensive agents: Risk of excessive hypotension. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Possible reduction in enalapril's effectiveness and increased risk of renal dysfunction. Diuretics: Risk of severe hypotension, especially with the first dose. Potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics: Risk of hyperkalemia. Lithium: Increased lithium levels in the blood, potentially leading to toxicity. Antidiabetic agents: Increased risk of hypoglycemia.

Contraindications

Allergies: Do not use if the animal is allergic to angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors. Renal insufficiency: Avoid unless advised by a veterinarian. Blood abnormalities: Exercise caution in cases of cerebrovascular insufficiency or collagen vascular disease. Coronary insufficiency: Use under strict monitoring. Electrolyte imbalances: Low sodium levels or hyperkalemia. Unmonitored congestive heart failure: Requires prior veterinary supervision.

Side effects

Reduced appetite: The animal may eat less than usual. Cough: A persistent cough may occur. Vomiting and diarrhea: Digestive issues are possible. Weakness and lethargy: The animal may seem tired or less active. Hypotension: A drop in blood pressure may happen. Renal dysfunction: Risk of kidney failure, especially at high doses. Hyperkalemia: Abnormally high potassium levels in the blood. Rare autoimmune reactions: Itching and reduced white blood cells.
