Felimazole® (methimazole) treats hyperthyroidism in cats by reducing thyroid hormones, with essential veterinary monitoring to manage side effects.
Form
Felimazole® (methimazole) is a medication used to treat hyperthyroidism in cats by reducing thyroid hormone production. It is contraindicated in animals with allergies, immune disorders, kidney or liver disease, or bleeding disorders, as well as in pregnant or nursing females. Side effects include vomiting, loss of appetite, and reduced activity, especially during the first three months. Regular monitoring by a veterinarian is essential to check blood, thyroid, and liver functions. Handle the product with care and store it at room temperature, out of reach of children and animals.
Methimazole
Room temperature
– Regular physical examinations to assess the overall condition of the animal.
– Blood tests to monitor thyroid hormone levels and detect potential side effects, such as hepatic or hematologic abnormalities.
– Urinalysis to check kidney function, particularly at the start of treatment.
– Monitoring frequency:
– Initially every 2 to 4 weeks.
– Then every 6 months once the dose is stabilized.
Medications affecting hepatic metabolism: Drugs that induce or inhibit hepatic enzymes may alter the concentration of Felimazol® in the blood. Anticoagulants: Close monitoring is necessary as Felimazol® can influence the effect of anticoagulants. Other thyroid medications: Combining with other thyroid treatments may require dose adjustments.
