Prazosin is a medication used in cats to relax the urethral muscle and relieve urinary difficulties associated with feline lower urinary tract diseases.
Form
Prazosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker that relaxes smooth muscles, including those in blood vessels and the urethra. In cats, it is used off-label to relieve urinary straining associated with feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) by reducing urethral spasms. Although its effectiveness is mainly based on anecdotal evidence, it appears safe at common doses. Side effects are rare but include hypotension and gastrointestinal issues. Its use is generally limited to one week. It may also be prescribed for hypertension or certain heart diseases, but rarely as a first-line treatment.

Veterinary follow-up is essential when administering prazosin. It is recommended to monitor blood pressure, appetite, energy levels, and any signs of hypotension or side effects. If unusual symptoms occur, consult your veterinarian promptly to adjust the treatment if necessary.
Prazosin can interact with other medications that lower blood pressure, increasing the risk of hypotension. Caution is advised with diuretics and beta-blockers.
Prazosin should be used with caution in cats suffering from kidney disease, hypotension, or already taking antihypertensive medications.
Side effects of prazosin in cats are rare but may include hypotension, lethargy, weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
