Origin and history
The Barbet is an ancient French breed, mentioned as early as the 14th century. Originally used as a hunting dog for waterfowl, it is known for its swimming skills and ability to retrieve game from the marshes. Its name derives from the French word “barbe”, in reference to its characteristic beard. After nearly extinction in the 20th century, the breed was revitalized by enthusiasts.
Maintenance
It requires regular brushing to prevent knots. A scissor cut is recommended every two to three months to maintain a hair length of between 5 and 7 cm. Particular attention should be paid to the hygiene of its ears to prevent infections. It is important to offer it sufficient exercise and mental stimulation to ensure its well-being.
Health
He may be prone to hip dysplasia, epilepsy. Due to his long, drooping ears, he may be affected by ear infections.
