Obesity in rabbits is a common issue that can seriously impact their health and quality of life. Overweight rabbits are more prone to joint pain, pododermatitis, and heart disease. To ensure your rabbit stays healthy and active, follow these six proven strategies to prevent obesity in rabbits.
1. Eliminate treats entirely
Treats may seem harmless, but they are often high in sugar and calories. Removing them from your rabbit’s diet is a safe and effective way to support weight loss.
2. Provide unlimited hay and vegetables
Timothy hay should be the main component of your rabbit’s diet. In addition, offer a variety of safe, high-fiber vegetables to aid digestion and reduce calorie intake.

3. Minimize fruit intake
Fruits contain natural sugars and should be given in moderation. Limit them to one teaspoon per kilogram of body weight per day—or remove them completely for overweight rabbits.
4. Choose a low-calorie pellet and reduce quantity
If feeding pellets, select a high-fiber (18–24%) formula that’s low in calories and free of added seeds or dried fruits. Limit the amount to one tablespoon per kilogram per day, adjusting gradually to avoid digestive upset.
5. Increase daily exercise
Encourage movement by allowing your rabbit out of its cage for several hours in a safe, enriched environment. Toys, tunnels, and space to explore help burn energy and stimulate activity.
6. Monitor weight loss closely
Rabbits should lose weight slowly—around 1 to 2% of body weight per week. Weigh your rabbit weekly and work with your vet to adjust its feeding plan as needed.
