Atopica® is an immunosuppressive agent, meaning it reduces the activity of the immune system.
Form
Atopica® (cyclosporine) is an immunosuppressant used in dogs and cats. It treats allergy symptoms such as itching and skin redness. By modulating the immune system, it reduces inflammation associated with allergies. This medication is not recommended for animals with liver or kidney diseases, diabetes, malignant tumors, or weakened immunity. Side effects include appetite loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and gum overgrowth. Regular veterinary monitoring is crucial, especially for prolonged treatments.
Cyclosporine
At room temperature, in its original packaging. Capsules can be stored in the freezer to make administration easier.
It is recommended to have the animal regularly examined by a veterinarian if Atopica® is used long-term. The veterinarian can check for bacterial or fungal infections and ensure that none have developed.
They can also monitor the liver and kidneys’ health through blood tests.
Atopica® can interfere with the effectiveness of certain other medications when used simultaneously. Examples include ketoconazole, digoxin, amiodarone, androgens, diltiazem, erythromycin, metoclopramide, omeprazole, and phenobarbital. Please inform the veterinarian if your pet is already taking any medications before starting treatment with Atopica®. This ensures their compatibility.
Unless advised otherwise by a veterinarian, this product should not be used on animals with liver or kidney diseases, diabetes, malignant tumors, or any other condition that compromises immune system efficiency. This medication is also not recommended for pregnant or nursing animals, as well as young animals that have not yet lost their baby teeth. Please consult with a veterinarian for more information regarding contraindications.
The most common side effects are loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea. This product can also cause gum overgrowth (cell proliferation), excessive hair growth, and damage to the liver or kidneys. It predisposes animals to bacterial and fungal infections.
Administer the medication to the animal on an empty stomach, one hour before or two hours after a meal.
This product generally reaches its maximum effect 2 to 4 weeks after starting the treatment.
If side effects occur and are severe, worsen, or persist, please contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.
