Doxycycline is an antibiotic that treats bacterial infections in animals, requiring veterinary supervision and cautious use to prevent side effects and antibiotic resistance.
Form
Doxycycline, an antibiotic from the tetracycline class, treats various bacterial infections in small animals. This medication should be administered under veterinary supervision, especially in cases of liver disease or pregnancy. Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and decreased appetite, and it may cause esophageal narrowing without proper precautions. Doxycycline interacts with certain medications, such as antacids and penicillin. Store it at room temperature and strictly follow the prescription to prevent antibiotic resistance. Consult your veterinarian to ensure safe and effective use.

Room temperature
Antacids and iron supplements: Reduce doxycycline absorption. Penicillin: Decreases the effectiveness of penicillin-based antibiotics. Warfarin: Increases bleeding risk. Kaolin and pectin: Impair doxycycline absorption.
Liver diseases: Risky use in animals with liver disorders. Pregnancy: Not recommended for animals during gestation without veterinary advice. Hypersensitivity: Do not administer if the animal is allergic to this medication or its components.
Vomiting: Common reactions in some animals. Diarrhea: Possible digestive disturbances. Decreased appetite: The animal may eat less. Esophageal narrowing: Increased risk without proper precautions (e.g., providing water or food after administration).
Always provide at least 5 ml of water or food immediately after administering the medication. Without this, the tablet may get stuck in the esophagus, causing inflammation or narrowing. Ensure the animal eats if water isn’t given after the dose.
Follow the medication’s expiration date, as an expired product can be ineffective or harmful. Keep the medication out of reach of children and animals.
As this is an antibiotic, completing the prescription is crucial to prevent antibiotic resistance. Even if your pet seems cured, remaining bacteria may cause another infection requiring a less effective treatment.
