Form
Ganciclovir is an ophthalmic antiviral mainly prescribed for cats. It treats eye infections caused by the herpes virus. The ointment is applied directly to the eyes after cleaning them with an appropriate solution. Veterinarians monitor its use to prevent side effects, such as eye irritation or, if ingested, kidney and bone marrow damage. Administer this medication carefully. Follow storage and application instructions strictly to ensure its effectiveness and the animal’s safety.

Ganciclovir should not be mixed directly with any other medication.
This medication should not be used, unless advised otherwise by a veterinarian, in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to it or any of its components. If the ointment is ingested, for example, during grooming, it may cause bone marrow and kidney toxicity.
Reported side effects in humans and animals include blurred vision, eye irritation, superficial punctate keratitis (microscopic corneal erosions), and conjunctival redness.
Prevent the animal from cleaning the area near its eyes after application. If needed, an Elizabethan collar can be used. Any ophthalmic preparation should be discarded one month after opening. Additionally, wait five minutes between ocular products to allow each to be absorbed and act effectively.
