Portela

Portela is an injectable veterinary treatment designed to help relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis in cats. It contains relfovetmab, a monoclonal antibody that targets a protein involved in pain transmission. Administered by a veterinarian, Portela may help improve the comfort, mobility, and quality of life of cats with osteoarthritis for up to 3 months.

Form

injectable

Portela is an injectable veterinary medication used in cats to help relieve pain associated with osteoarthritis. Its active ingredient, relfovetmab, is a monoclonal antibody that targets NGF, or nerve growth factor, a protein involved in pain transmission. By blocking this pathway, Portela may help improve the comfort, mobility, and quality of life of cats with osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis in cats can present with subtle signs, such as difficulty jumping, hesitation on stairs, decreased activity, stiffness, reduced grooming, or behavioural changes. A veterinary examination is necessary to confirm that the pain is related to osteoarthritis.

Portela is administered by subcutaneous injection by the veterinary team, usually once every three months. This treatment may be an interesting option for cats that do not tolerate oral medication well.

Storage

Portela must be stored in the refrigerator between 2 and 8 °C, in its original packaging, and protected from light. The product must not be frozen, and the vial must be used immediately after opening.

Recommended follow-up

Veterinary follow-up is recommended after starting treatment with Portela to assess improvement in mobility, the cat’s comfort, and the possible presence of side effects. A re-evaluation is generally performed before each injection, approximately every 3 months.

Interaction with other drugs

No specific interaction is clearly documented with Portela, but its use with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or other monoclonal antibodies has not been sufficiently evaluated in cats. Always inform your veterinarian of all medications, supplements, or treatments your pet is receiving.

Contraindications

Portela is not suitable for all cats. It should not be used in cats under 12 months of age, pregnant or lactating females, cats intended for breeding, or cats with a known hypersensitivity to relfovetmab or to any of the ingredients in the product.

Side effects

Portela is generally well tolerated, but some cats may experience side effects such as pain at the injection site, decreased appetite, hair loss, dermatitis, or skin lesions with scabs. Any unusual change after the injection should be reported to the veterinary team.

Warning

Portela must be used under veterinary supervision. Inform the medical team of any medication, recent treatment, or history of allergic reaction. Follow-up is recommended to assess the response to treatment and monitor for possible side effects.
